•• * Периодически входящее в моду выражение fancy footwork не очень удачно переведено в ABBYY Lingvo: разнообразные движения ног; в переносном смысле – активные действия, активная деятельность. Несколько больше материала в Новом БАРСе: здесь находим ловкое маневрирование, беготня за материалом ( у журналистов); есть и неплохие переводы примеров (ему пришлось покрутиться/побегать). Но, на мой взгляд, самый адекватный (во многих случаях полностью эквивалентный) вариант – изобретательность.
•• Вот пример из публицистической статьи в газете Boston Globe. Автор комментирует скандал с корифеем консервативного радиокомментария Рашем Лимбоу, который, как оказалось, на протяжении многих лет употреблял наркотики:
•• With a few exceptions, conservatives have shown some fancy footwork in defending Rush. Former Bush speechwriter David Frum said, “I don’t think any less of him for having ordinary frailties.” Gary Bauer, president of American Values, made a moral distinction between getting addicted in order to get high and getting addicted to kill pain. Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, defended him to Don Imus because Rush never claimed to be a victim. And a dittohead caller on his show said, “we all make mistakes.”
•• Характер аргументации говорит именно об изобретательности защитников Лимбоу; просматривается и намек на лицемерие – эта коннотация тоже, на мой взгляд, присутствует в смысловой структуре fancy footwork. У переводчика здесь большой выбор вариантов – ...консерваторы из кожи лезут вон/проделывают разнообразные кульбиты, стремясь оправдать Раша.
•• Интересно здесь также слово dittohead, которое на первый взгляд может показаться издевательским и окказионально-авторским. Однако поиск в гугле опровергает это предположение. Существует сайт www.dittohead.org, дающий этому слову (вошло ли оно в словарный состав языка или является своего рода жаргонным паролем – пока неясно) четкое определение:
•• What is a dittohead? A dittohead is someone who enjoys Rush Limbaugh’s show, independently of whether or not they agree with him all the time. The first time it was used was after one caller lavished praise for Rush’s show without necessarily agreeing with all he had to say. The next caller said, “ Ditto what that guy just said” and the first “ dittohead” was born.
•• Онлайновый словарь www.urbandictionary.com содержит определения, предложенные его посетителями. Среди них самое простое: A devoted fan of Rush Limbaugh (по-русски я бы сказал «лимболюб» или «лимбофанат»). Но предлагается и более широкая трактовка: A person whose opinions are based entirely off of their favorite pundit’s opinions. То есть полностью согласный/целиком и полностью одобряющий. Американский вариант «одобрямса».
